The Trump administration has proposed a rule to dramatically expand its surveillance over immigrants, as well as U.S. citizens sponsoring their immigrant family members. The proposal includes collecting DNA, voiceprints, iris and face scans, as well as other personal characteristics for virtually all immigration and citizenship applicants to be stored in government databases, potentially forever. Even survivors of trafficking and domestic violence, including children, would not be excluded. Learn more here.
While padding the pockets of big data and tech companies, the proposal expands the police state, is an affront to democracy and the values of privacy enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, and is deeply dehumanizing. The administration has provided no valid justification for indefinite and extreme surveillance and has proven unable to safeguard personal data in the past.
If you reject a culture of fear, extreme policing, surveillance, and treating immigrants and the U.S. citizens who sponsor them as less than human, submit your public comment today.
Instead of the standard 60-day public comment period, the administration is trying to push this devastating rule through as quickly and discreetly as possible by only offering a 30-day window.
To slow this rule down, a huge number of unique public comments must be submitted by 1 p.m. Pacific Time Tuesday, October 13, 2020.
While you can submit the sample comment as is, we strongly encourage you to make the comment your own. Consider sharing your own experiences, stories, perspectives, values and research as to why we should not institute mass and indefinite surveillance of immigrants.
Note: Your name and identifying information will become part of the public record. If you are uncomfortable with that, you have the option of submitting a comment anonymously through this platform by typing "anonymous" twice in the name box. Comments must be submitted in English.
This click-to-comment campaign will close at 1 p.m. PT Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020.
